Prospective volunteers can easily submit expressions of interest through this portal. The process is designed to be user-friendly and captures all necessary information for new members wishing to join an MSAR unit. If you are 16 or over and interested in serving your community, there are many roles available both on and off the water.
How to Join an Existing Unit
The first step is to get in touch. Please send an email outlining your interest, including answers to the questions below. This helps us direct your enquiry to the right people at an existing unit.
- What is your full name and the town/suburb you live in?
- Which existing MSAR unit would you be interested in joining?
Please send your answers to Colin Dixon at col@dixon.au.

Membership Renewals & Compliance
Maintaining an active and compliant volunteer status is crucial. Our system will facilitate easy membership renewals and ensure all volunteers meet ongoing regulatory requirements. This section will be updated with online renewal forms and automated notification systems.
Key Compliance Requirements
All volunteer competencies are aligned with the standards defined in the Marine Safety (Emergency service vessels) Exemption 2025 (AMSA EX24). This instrument outlines the specific requirements mandated by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) and supported by Emergency Management Victoria (EMV). Key points include:
- Proof of identity is a standard requirement for all levels of seafarer certification.
- Vessel operations must be covered in the vessel’s Safety Management System (SMS), and all crew must be trained for specific risks.
- The National Standard for Commercial Vessels (NSCV) outlines requirements for design, construction, equipment, and operations.
- Our system helps track continuous professional development and any required re-certifications to ensure ongoing compliance.
